How the CFL playoff format works

Six of nine teams qualify: the top three in each division. The first-place team gets a bye to the Division Final and home field. The second-place team hosts the third-place team in the Division Semi-Final. The crossover rule lets a fourth-place team replace the other division's third-place team if it has strictly more points.

FAQ

When do the CFL playoffs start?

The Division Semi-Finals are on October 31, 2026, followed by the Division Finals on November 7 and the Grey Cup on November 15, 2026.

What is a magic number?

The number of standings points a team needs (from its own wins or rivals' losses) to guarantee a playoff spot regardless of other results.

Can two teams from the same division play in the Grey Cup?

Yes. With the crossover rule, a fourth-place team can win the other division's bracket, so two teams from one division can meet in the Grey Cup.

Who gets a first-round bye?

The first-place team in each division skips the Semi-Final and hosts the Division Final.

What happens if teams are tied for a playoff spot?

The official tiebreakers apply: wins, head-to-head record and net points, division net points, overall net points, points scored.

How are the seeds on this page calculated?

Seeds are recalculated after every final score using the current standings, the crossover test and the official tiebreaker order.

Seeds, byes and crossover scenarios on this page recalculate after every game through the end of the 2026 regular season.
